A precedent study
The Portalegre Auditorium expresses its ventilation strategy on the exterior of the building as a celebration of mechanics. Acknowledging the site's industrial history through the metal facade, huge pipes which glide along the roof of the auditorium and stairs and walkways which resemble conveyor belts of the factory which previously inhabited the site.
ACOUSTIC ISOLATION AND DAMPENING
The location of the external pipes are not only a design consideration but also an acoustic advantage considering the function of the building being an auditorium. The pipes are insulated to minimise the sound which travels through the vents and into the interior space as much as possible. Additionally the pipes are very large to slow the air flow through them creating less noise through the steel pipes.
